The Turkuun, Turkuun! – Turku, Turku! concert will be organised at the Turku Market Square on June 9th 2010 at 7 pm. The concert celebrates the programme for the upcoming Capital of Culture. The celebration for the people will feature the famous Riku Niemi Orchestra together with solo artists who are all connected to Turku in various ways.

The stage that will be set in front of the Orthodox Church will host performances by soloists Tommi Läntinen, Kauko Röyhkä, Tuula Amberla, Jorma Kääriäinen, Felix Zenger and Anni Niemelä together with the Riku Niemi Orchestra. In addition, classic compositions from Turku will take new forms with new arrangements by the Turku-based Aino Choir. Riku Niemi has assembled the concert especially for this event. The hour-long event will be hosted and presented by journalist Minna Kuukka.

Together with the concert, the audience will be presented with the versatile Turku European Capital of Culture 2011 programme. The first issue of the Turku 2011 magazine will be available at the event. In addition, the Turku 2011 Programme book that presents the entire programme will be available for purchase. A large number of the project organisers will be present at the Market Square. The event is organised by the Turku 2011 Foundation that prepares the Capital of Culture year.

Currently, the programme is nearly finished and consists of 120 individual projects. The programme will be further supplemented during 2010 with some additional projects. The preparation of the programme that is divided under five different themes has proceeded as planned and in schedule.

After the event, the Turku, Turku! concert and the 2011 programme will proceed to Helsinki, where the upcoming Capitals of Culture Turku and Tallinn present themselves at the Helsinki Senate Square on 11th-13th June.
