Inner landscapes at Portsakoti

Flashes of Life

The Inner Landscapes exhibition brings together ceramics, photography, sound and video images. It digs through layers of history by unearthing individual stories and photo albums. The artists have produced works that show flashes of the lives of nine inhabitants of Turku over a long period of time. By juxtaposing personal memories with the history of Turku City, the exhibition helps us access, through perceptions and impressions, the ways in which people find their place in the world.

Star Wars: Uncut mini-festival

Based on American Casey Pugh’s idea and realised by fans, the Star Wars: Uncut film will be shown in Turku on 8 October. Last year, technology guru Casey Pugh won the Participative Media category of the Turku 2011 Foundation’s media art competition. In the Star Wars: Uncut (SWU) project, Pugh cut the first Star Wars episode, Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), into 15-second segments, which Star Wars fans then used to re-create the film by utilising animation, home videos and parody.

Traveling with music: Fado

Dramatic Fado from the heart of Portugal

Fado has gained the position of national music in Portugal. Dating back to the 1820's, it probably has its roots in the music of the African slaves that were shipped in from Brazil. The Portuguese made their own version of the music: song  accompanied with a guitar. The genre spread and became popular via taverns, brothels and street performers. Fado became a part of the daily life, its melancholic tunes echoing throughout the alleys and kitchens of Lisbon.
