Priit Pärn

Animate exhibition series looks at the role the medium has in the field of contemporary art. The series will kick off with Estonian animation director Priit Pärn, one of the most prestigious animation artists in the world and a central force driving animation education at the Turku Arts Academy towards global recognition. The Darkroom gallery at the Turku Art Museum presents a selection of Priit Pärn’s work from across the decades.

Tom of Finland

The legendary homoerotic works of Tom of Finland have become iconic stereotypes of masculine gay men throughout the world. Many people will be surprised to learn that arguably the most internationally acclaimed Finnish artist comes from Kaarina, a neighbouring town to Turku. Now, Tom of Finland alias Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991) is coming home!

Fire! Fire!

What is so fascinating about fire? The flickering shadows on the wall, the multi-coloured flames, the raw power and energy of fire? Or is it the notions that we associate with fire: burning love, exhilarating passion and the fiery flames of hell? Perhaps we are drawn to the two opposite qualities of fire – the security and the danger fire provides. While making a live fire may not be part of our lives anymore, our fascination with fire has not diminished.

Kiasma presents: Eija-Liisa Ahtila / ARS11

The Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art will attend Turku 2011 with its own two-part production in cooperation with the Kiasma Foundation. The production showcases two centrepieces of the Kiasma media collection: Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s video installation WHERE IS WHERE? - MISSÄ ON MISSÄ?, 2008 and Isaac Julien’s video installation WESTERN UNION: Small Boats, 2007.
