Submissions
- Contestants must be aged between 18 and 35 on the closing date of the competition (05.01.2011), and resident in the European Union or one of the following countries: Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Croatia, Turkey, Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova
- No paid employees of the NISI MASA European Office, the Turku 2011 Foundation, or any of our sponsors may participate.
- Videos may not exceed 5 minutes in length. Dialogue or text in a language other than English must be subtitled in English
- Works produced after 1st of January 2008 are eligible. Only one submission per contestant. Submissions must be made in one category only: documentary or fiction
- In order to be included in the contest, contestants must submit their video online through our website and submit the completed application form before midnight on 05.01.2011
- NISI MASA will confirm registration of each submission to the email address provided on the application form. Personal contact details given during the registration process will remain confidential
- Winning contestants are responsible for providing DVD copies (highest quality possible) of their work to NISI MASA for screening purposes. The costs of mailing the copies and compliance with customs regulations are at their charge
- Winners will also be responsible for providing any necessary further information, credits and film stills required regarding the work submitted, for inclusion in our promotional materials
- NISI MASA takes no responsibility for breach of copyright of third parties in the contestants’ uploaded work. By making their video available for viewing on our website the contestant confirms that they have the right to diffuse all of material contained in it, including music and sound effects
- NISI MASA and the Turku 2011 Foundation are entitled to disqualify an entry if it contains material that is illegal, pornographic, racist or offensive in nature, or if the entry otherwise violates the contest rules
- Submissions must also comply with Vimeo uploading regulations. Please refer to Vimeo’s own community guidelines.
Selection of winners and prize
- There will be a total of 18 winning films, which will be decided by a special jury of film professionals
- Evaluation of finalist works by the jury will be made according to the following criteria: relevance to the subject of multilingualism, innovative and original qualities, technical proficiency
- Only one winner can be appointed per film submission – this will be the person indicated on the application form
- Winners will be announced at the very latest on 31st February 2011
- The prize of the contest is an invitation to participate in the “Polyglot” itinerant documentary filmmaking workshop and mini film festival organized by NISI MASA in cooperation with the Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture
- The following costs will be covered for all participants within the framework of the workshop and festival: return flight or other transportation from their home town to Turku (up to a maximum of 300 Euros), as well as accommodation, meals, and local travel expenses
- Please note that participants may be asked to bring their own personal equipment if possible (i.e. video camera, sound equipment, laptop computer with editing software)
- In entering your film into the contest, you thereby confirm your availability to attend and actively participate in the filmmaking workshop and film festival from the 3rd to the 19th of June 2011
- Contestants also confirm their motivation to actively take part in the preparation stages of the workshop, taking place from February to June 2011 (research, exchange of video letters, being present at planning meetings online)
- If selected participants are unable to attend the workshop and festival they must inform the organisers without delay. NISI MASA reserves the right to retract the invitation for specific individuals if they abuse their participation, are repeatedly absent from preparatory team meetings, make false statements or otherwise endanger the successful undertaking of the project
- The composition of the workshop teams will be decided by NISI MASA, on the basis of the participants’ submitted work, as well as their previous experiences and interests
- As there will be international teams, please note that the main working language of the workshop will be English. A translator fluent in Finnish and Swedish will be available to help during the film shoots
Diffusion rights
- By entering your film into the contest, you give NISI MASA and the Turku 2011 Foundation the non-exclusive right to diffuse the work online (not only on the official website www.polyglot-turku.eu but other appropriate means, e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, podcasts), via public screenings, and inclusion on the official Polyglot: on the way to Turku DVD
- The films produced during the Cine Boat workshop will be the copyright of NISI MASA. NISI MASA will be credited as “producer”, and reserves exclusive distribution and diffusion rights to these films for an unlimited period of time, via any appropriate means (public screening events of NISI MASA and our partners, internet and television broadcast, submission to film festivals, inclusion on the Polyglot: on the way to Turku DVD)
- NISI MASA may use extracts of the films produced during the Cine Boat workshop in a modified form for promotional purposes (e.g. “making of”, advertisements)
- NISI MASA may make the Polyglot: on the way to Turku DVD available for sale and/or charge admission to the general public for our official screening events, to cover our costs
- NISI MASA may in exceptional cases transfer diffusion rights of the workshop films to third parties, such as paid television channels. No commercial sales of the films will be made without the consent of the authors. Revenues of any sales will be divided, 70% going to NISI MASA and 30% to the authors
- Any sales revenues (from DVDs, screening tickets, commercial broadcasting) gained by NISI MASA will be dedicated to covering the costs of promoting and sending the films
- NISI MASA will endeavour to ensure a wide distribution for the workshop results and will give appropriate credits to the authors in all promotional materials
General
- NISI MASA reserves the right to modify the contest rules as deemed necessary if the submissions received are of insufficient number or quality
- Any disputes arising from this document will be settled according to French law
