Japan Today vol. 13
Since 1999, the EU-Japan Fest Committee has annually invited 3–6 European photographers to depict Japanese everyday life and culture through European eyes. In 2011, these photographers will be selected from Finland, Estonia. The photographs are now gathered into an exhibition in Turku as well as into a photograph book. The curator of the European Eyes on Japan project and the editor of the exhibition catalogue is Mikiko Kikuta.
European Eyes on Japan uses photography to explore Japanese modern life. What is unique about Japanese culture and society? What are the Japanese things that the locals see as everyday life but which draw the specific attention of Europeans? The topic, which changes annually, is a specific city or a Japanese regional prefecture. This time, the photographers traveled to the northern part of the Honshu Island, to the prefecture of Akita.
