Turku showcased itself in Helsinki

Turku invited Helsinki residents to the Senate Square for a free-of-charge summer concert.

The promotional events of the Capitals of Culture 2011 formed an integral part of the Helsinki Week events. 

Turku and Tallinn came to Helsinki on the invitation of the Mayor of Helsinki – Jussi Pajunen. The Capitals of Culture arrived at Senate Square in Helsinki together on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The greetings from Turku were passed on foot by relay and those from Tallinn by boat.

The official greetings of the Capitals of Culture were passed on to the people by Mayor of Turku Mikko Pukkinen and Mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar.

Turkuun, Turkuun! – Turku, Turku! concert at the Senate Square on Friday

Turku invited Helsinki residents to the Senate Square for a free-of-charge summer concert. All of the concert performers were somehow related to Turku, the European Capital of Culture 2011. 

The performers included the magnificent Riku Niemi Orchestra featuring Felix Zenger, Kauko Röyhkä, Tuula Amberla, Tommi Läntinen, Anni Niemelä and, for example, the awarded Aino Choir from Turku. The concert culminated with the unique performance by Paleface and together with the Turku-based reggae group Kaikukasti. The Turku concert was hosted by Minna Kuukka.

The event at the Senate Square started already at 4pm with previews of the Turku 2011 programme. The stage hosted performance samples of the spectacular Cirque Dracula variety performance, stunning aerial acrobatics and circus performances, for example. The show also featured the Turun Nuori Teatteri theatre group and its heavy metal musical, 1827 Infernal Musical!

The weekend dedicated to the Capitals of Culture filled the Senate Square with all kinds of cultural events. In addition, the Capitals of Culture promoted their activities in the clubs in Helsinki and in the Korjaamo Culture Factory.
