Tiga and Kim Ann Foxman are the stars of Turku Modern MMXI's vivid weekend
Turku Modern, now organized for the third time, happens in the clubs and galleries of Turku from 21st to 24th of July. Canadian dj-producer Tiga and the New York-based Kim Ann Foxman, known from Hercules and Love Affair are among the most anticipated names of the club music festival.
Perfoming at Klubi on Friday, the man behind Turbo Recordings, Tiga, is one of the most well-known and colourful characters in dance music. Sunglasses At Night, a single made with Jori Hulkkonen (as Zyntherius) started Tiga's international career, which includes several club classics, two solo albums, mix cd's, various remixes and a radio show on BBC. Not to mention untouchable dj gigs, which we will experience now in Finland for the first time in five years.
Arriving to Turku on Saturday, Kim Ann Foxman, in turn started her solo career just quite recently. However, the reception has been passionate, thanks to her position as a vocalist in Hercules And Love Affair, one of the fundamental groups in today's house and modern disco scenes. Foxman's debut single Creature is produced by Hercules And Love Affair's Andy Butler and is heavily influenced by the early 90's classic house music, a lot like the style icon's dj sets.
Also playing at Klubi on Friday, Benoit & Sergio combine elements from modern continental club aesthetics, romantic electro pop and even Paul Simon. Performing live, the Washington D.C. duo has released a slew of praised singles on such labels as DFA and Visionquest.
Saturday's programme at Klubi also includes the Finnish house music import item Renaissance Man, who are doing gigs and remixes with a relentless pace. During 2011, their debut album will be released on Tiga's Turbo Recordings. Also a duo noticed world-wide, Shine 2009 from Helsinki will play at Aula on Sunday. Their dreamy debut album Realism features Paula Abdul, an acknowledged fan of the band.
For more exotic vibes, head to the Night Moves parties on Donna. On Saturday evening Baris K from Istanbul cooks up a hypnotic Turkish mixture of East and West, old and new, cosmic disco and psychedelic rock. Also combining disco and rock, Anton Klint from Gothenburg plays on Donna on Friday. The talented dj is also known as a central figure in the Italians Do It Better recording act Tiedye.
