Neighbourhood Weeks to continue with Pohjola, Raunistula and Koroinen
The Neighbourhood Weeks project will continue in late May with two adjacent neighbourhoods, Pohjola and Raunistula, and the Koroinen neighbourhood. The elaborate programme is chock-full of stories on the histories of the neighbourhood and features several traditional events.
The Neighbourhood Weeks project, a part of the Turku 2011 programme, showcases various Turku neighbourhoods one at a time for a week each. The theme weeks emphasise the unique characteristics of each neighbourhood with locally generated programme that is realised through the cooperation of various associations, societies, clubs and other local contributors.
The programme for Pohjola and Raunistula uncovers the local histories and the character of the neighbourhoods through; for example, a discussion event, pedestrian tours, an exhibition and a play. In addition, the neighbourhoods will organise their own traditional events, such as the Pohjolan Pihat yard event and a planting festival to celebrate the seeding season. Programme contributors include the Pohjolan Pihat Committee, Aurala Open College, Raunistula Property Association and Konsa Traditions and Culture Association.
The programme for Koroinen is filled with historical stories dating as far back as the Middle Ages. Upcoming programme includes a historical street survey of Räntämäki streets, Jenny Tallgren’s guided walks and expeditions along the ancient shoreline. There are plenty of programmes for people of all ages; the entire family can enjoy the Hamaro Fair or the Koroinen Plant Dyeing Event, for example. Programme contributors include the Halinen-Räntämäki Association, Halisten Omakotiyhdistys Association and Hamaro Small Property Owners’ Association.
In July, the neighbourhood weeks will continue with theme weeks for Maaria and Paattinen, Uittamo and Ispoinen.
The Neighbourhood Weeks will be complemented with unique sightseeing tours to Pohjola and Raunistula, campaigns by travelling bus postmen and the Raising the Flag workshops. The programme for the theme weeks also includes the Hellou and hi! photography competition for young people, which accepts photographic entries until 31 May.
