Flux Aura 2011 has taken over the River Aura and its environs
The international environmental art event Flux Aura 2011 takes a look at life and nature around the River Aura and the city of Turku that it flows through. The core of the event is twelve environmental art works, which are situated by the river and the riverside in summer 2011. The event is coordinated by the Turku Artists’ Association.
Environmental art enters the city in summer 2011
The Turku Artists’ Association’s massive environmental art project Flux Aura 2011 is now finished. The twelve art works of the event have appeared in the river and the riverside to delight and astonish people. There are art works both in the River Aura itself and its environs: in parks, on and under bridges, in buses and pavement stones. Some of the art works are there only for a moment, some are permanent, and some of them invite the viewer also to take part in them. The event encourages both the inhabitants of the city as well as its visitors to find surprises and new experiences in their city. The art works are situated in the city for the duration of the summer, and they can be experienced for free.
Thematically the art works are linked to the River Aura, to flowing water, to the city and to life and nature surrounding the river. All the art works are in place from 20.6.2011 on.
The event creates new networks
Artists from Finland and abroad have cooperated to bring forth the art works of Flux Aura 2011. The event creates new networks between artists, as the artists from around the world work together. The call for applications was open for artists from Southwest Finland, who were instructed to choose a partner from either Finland or abroad to work with.
By the deadline 49 proposals were received, by a total of 80 artists. The jury, which consisted of PhD Tuula Karjalainen, Professor Villu Jaanisoo and the representatives of the Turku Artists' Association, chose 12 artists or groups to realize their art works.
Flux Aura 2011 is the third major environmental art event organized by the Turku Artists' Association. The first Flux Aura was realized in Turku in 1996, and two years ago Fluxations 2009 served as an introduction to the big event of the Culture Capital year.
