Cirque Dracula’s Russian bar act takes the first prize

The Russian bar acrobatics act coached by Finland-based Slava Volkov, of Cirque du Soleil fame, has won the first prize at the Leipzig international variety festival on July 4th 2010. The acrobatics act is a part of the Turku Capital of Culture programme’s Cirque Dracula variety performance.

The Leipzig international variety festival witnessed a premium competition. The fact that experimental juggler Denis Paumier from Les Objects Volantes, an avid visitor to Finland, and elastic acrobat Julia from Cirque du Soleil, weren’t among the prize winners, speaks for the level of competition.

A worldwide preliminary elimination round cut the number of finalists to 14. The Finnish act that won the competition featured circus artists Mikko Karhu, Antti Kulmala and Slava Volkov.

The winning artists were awarded a contract with the Krystallpalast variety theatre in Germany. In addition, the Cirque Dracula performance was given a three-month visiting performance contract to Leipzig during 2012-2013.

The Russian bar acrobatics act will be staged in 2011 as part of the Cirque Dracula performance produced by ArtTeatro as part of the Turku Capital of Culture programme. The performances will be held at the Spiegeltent Theatre in Mannerheim Park, Turku, during the summer of 2011.
