Building of the art saunas begins!
SaunaLab opens in less than two weeks, on June 1. The saunas will soon be warm, and the preparations for the summery sauna experiences are well on the way. The building of two art saunas has begun, and soon they will be ready for viewing and visiting.
Preparations for the summer opening at the Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Arena are in progress. The garlic-shaped The Sounding Dome sauna designed by Jan-Erik Andersson has been transported to Kupittaa and American sound artist Shawn Decker has arrived in Finland to finish the soundscape of the sauna. The work on the exterior of The Sounding Dome is finished and its interior is being prepared for use.
The city centre of Turku is not without its share in the action. Solaris sauna – co-designed by artist Hans-Christian Berg and industrial designer Mika Ihanus – is being built in the Ekoluoto Art Park next to the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum. The foundation for the sauna as well as the steel frame that supports the sauna have already been constructed. Next, the glass walls will be installed and the interior built.
Work on Harri Markkula’s Hot Cube and Heidi Lunabba’s Sauna Obscura will begin later this week.
The tickets for SaunaLab are already for sale, so book your tickets now and ensure you'll get to bathe in the art sauna you want during the shift of your choice! Tickets for the communal sauna turns are sold in the museums of the Museum Centre of Turku and the private sauna turns can be bought from Lippupiste (www.lippu.fi). One turn is 50 minutes long and consecutive turns can be bought.
