100 conversations about being silent in 4.33 hours
Organised at the Turku Volunteer Fire Department building on 20 October, BLACKMARKET No. 14 speaks of quietness and silence. Finns are often considered as people with a special talent for and experience in keeping quiet. At BLACKMARKET, you can eavesdrop on them talking about quietness and silence.
Each of the 52 experts participating in the event will sit by their tables and discuss the themes of quietness and silence through their own special field and point of view. BLACKMARKET unravels some of the institutional structures of knowledge mediation and expertise transfers from one person to another through direct discussion.
52 experts of silence
All experts of quietness and silence participating in the BLACKMARKET event have now been confirmed, with the latest additions being Sister Lena from the Turku Bridgettine Convent and Developer Risto Joutsiniemi from the Windside company, whose silent wind turbines have been installed, for example, on the world’s most energy-efficient cleantech skyscraper Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou, China.
Other experts at the event will include astronomer Esko Valtaoja, cultural activist Aiju von Schönemann, rap artist Signmark, electro-musician Jori Hulkkonen, poets Leevi Lehto and Markku Into, parson Jouni Lehikoinen, scholar Outi Ampuja, composer Mikko Heiniö, professor Hannu Salmi, dancer/choreographer Tiina Lindfors, former minister Arja Alho and the newly elected air guitar world champion Aline Westphal. BLACKMARKET also offers the opportunity to quieten down, practising yoga with Virve Repo or to take a psychoanalytical session with Pirkko Niemelä, Professor Emerita in psychology.
Some of the themes of the discussions will be the interrogation strategies used by the police, the quietest locations in Finland, mental hospitals in the early 1900s, the geological disposal of used nuclear fuel, terminal treatment and the last moments of human life, the aesthetics and experience of death, sign language as an aesthetic experience, urban soundscapes, the silenced war memorial stones, children’s selective speechlessness, silent history and family secrets.
