The Bihu Dance Group from India

The Bihu Dance Group is supported by Dakhayini Sanskritic Gosthi Institute. The Bihu Dance Group is touring Finland in July 2011. The group consists of eight dancers and four musicians.

Joly Borah is the group’s award winning choreographer from North East India. She is not only a stage choreographer but has also choreographed more than 100 music videos.

The performance of the Bihu Dance Group is connected to the Bohag bihu festival, which is celebrated three times a year in Assam. In this Bihu girls and and boys dance together singing songs related to nature, harvesting, brotherhood and off course love which is in their hearts. The instruments played during the performance are the drums Dhul and Taal, Pepa flute, Gogona harp, Sutuli horn and a bamboo flute. The performances in Finland are divided into two parts, to the Goalini dance and to the modern dance. The Goalini dance comes from the district of Goalpara of Assam. Only girls perform
in this dance as the very word Goalini means lades. Here they sing songs related to Lord Krishna. In the text Krishna teases the Goalinis by playing this flute and tempts all the ladies to leave their chores and to come enjoy the melody of his flute. The Modern Dance is based on the classical dance of Assam, Satriya Dance and accompanied by songs called geet. Both the dance and songs relate to Lord Krishna’s various tales.
