Get involved!

How could the City be more bold and beautiful? Could the City be made a bit more fun? And what if there were dozens of happenings and people had enthusiasm for culture?

How might the Capital of Culture be reflected in your residential area? Your Capital of Culture, Turku 2011, invites you and the residents in your area to contribute to our Capital of Culture year and organise an event.

Is there a special annual event that has been held in your area for years, or would you like to get the wheels turning and develop something new and fun? A ‘Get involved!’ event could be an existing event in your area that is further developed with new content. Or your ’Get involved’ event might be something innovative and completely unique. The most important thing is that the people in your area work together and independently organise an event that is open to the public.

You don’t even always need money, it might only require pooling the resources of your community. Enlist the poet next door to take the stage, a youth band to rock the crowds, hold a painting competition to expose fresh talent, and bring in the best local bakers to satisfy the general sweet tooth. There you have it, all the makings of a fun event. All public festivals and other joyous celebrations serve as an integral part of making the Capital of Culture our own.

When will it happen?

Already 24 ‘Get involved’ events have been organised for the spring and summer of 2009. And more are on their way, as new organisers join in and old events are turned into tradition.
