The Wäinö! exhibition will showcase the talents and visions of both established and novice sculptors. Wäinö! will extend the range of exhibitions on display during the Capital of Culture year by focusing on sculpture and highlighting the skills and narrative talent of a new generation of sculptors.
Altogether, eight artists will participate in the exhibition. Four of the invited sculptors are well-known Finnish artists: sculptors Maija Helasvuo and Villu Jaanisoo and visual artists Vesa-Pekka Rannikko and Miina Äkkijyrkkä. In addition, four new young Finnish artists will be selected to participate in the exhibition after a round of applications . Jan Kenneth Weckman, Doctor of Arts and an artist, will be the curator for the exhibition. This exhibition will be the responsibility of the Wäinö Aaltonen Association.
The Wäinö! exhibition is a competition as well: one of the eight participating artists will be awarded with a private exhibition in Turku during 2014. Moving past 2011, Wäinö! exhibitions will be organised every four years.
The exhibition is named after Wäinö Aaltonen (1894–1966) from Turku, one of the most famous and well-recognised Finnish sculptors.
