SaunaLab: The Sounding Dome Sauna

Sounds Like Garlic!

The garlic-shaped sauna, The Sounding Dome Sauna, designed by Jan-Erik Andersson is imaginative and fairytale-like. The sauna incorporates a soundscape created for it by the American sound artist Shawn Decker. The sauna’s world of sounds changes with the temperature and the humidity – once you throw water on the sauna stove, the sauna’s world of sounds will change. The sounds will emerge from the ”tops” of the garlic. The sauna is located in the historical Kupittaa Park in the outdoor swimming pool area opened in 1912.

The water oasis in Finland’s oldest and largest city park, Kupittaa Park, has three swimming pools and the visitors can enjoy a 27 C-degree-warm swimming water.  The cosy restaurant Kupittaan paviljonki is located by the swimming pool.

The Sounding Dome Sauna open Mon-Sun at 10 am–7 pm
during 1 June–21 August 2011, closed 24 – 25 June

  • Sauna ticket 5 €/person + swimming pool ticket 5 €/person, in total 10 €/person
  • children under the age of 12: sauna ticket 4 €/person + swimming pool ticket 2,50 €/person, in total 6,50 €/person
  • unemployed, students, pensioners: sauna ticket 4 €/person + swimming pool ticket 3 €/person, in total 7 €/person

Ticket sale for The Sounding Dome Sauna at Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Pool Area (1 June–21 August 2011 during the opening hours of the Ticket Office). Advance tickets are not available.

* Attention! The sauna which is located by the swimming pool does not have the same shift system as the other saunas. As the visitors buy a ticket for both swimming and sauna, they can have a sauna during their visit at the Kupittaa Outdoor Swimming Pool Area, assuming there is space enough in the sauna. Open to all sauna ticket holders.

The Sounding Dome Sauna is one of the four saunas, designed by different artists and constructed in different areas of Turku.  Sauna will invite the public to come and look inside. And to take a sauna, of course.

SaunaLab: Sauna Obscura

Sauna Walk
You can come to the Sauna Walk to row, paddle or walk. In the end of the walk visitors will be offered a summery birch drink, and art that is connected to bathing. The luckiest ones also get to bathe in an art sauna.
