Performanssi 2011 27.-29.5.2011

Performanssi 2011 is an event produced by the Artists' Association MUU. The event is a part of the official Turku 2011 European Capital of Culture program, and it culminates in a performance art festival held in Turku during the weekend 27–29 May 2011. The three-day festival includes performance evenings, site-specific performances, a sound art exhibition, video performances, workshops, curators’ seminars, lectures, public discussions, and a club held at the end of the festival. In addition the program includes the launch of Performanssipankki (‘Performance Art Bank’), a new database presenting the actual field of Finnish performance art. The databank will be launched both as a website, performanssi.com, and a catalogue. During 2011, the festival will also expand in the form of video performances to other European cities, including Hamburg, Helsinki, Riga, Tallinn and Tromso.

Performanssi 2011 festival features a number of national and international artists from the field of contemporary performance art. The artists are selected by three invited curators, Live Art Development Agency (UK), Christopher Hewitt (UK/Germany) and Kimmo Modig (Finland). The curators are also taking part in the curators’ seminar held in Helsinki on 26th May and in Turku on 29th May. In addition, during the festival week, there will be video performances from various Finnish and international makers, and performances from local artists.

The performance venues of the festival are the Barker-theatre, the Fluxee club at Tehdas Theatre, the cultural space of Kutomo run by Ehkä-production, the Titanik Gallery, the Biological Museum of Turku and the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art. Some performances are also seen in the city environment. The video performances of the festival’s Videotheque program spreads in various locations such as cafés, offices, and even private homes. The video works are selected through the international open call organized by the Artists’ Association MUU.

Performanssi 2011 is a continuation for the international performance art festivals Amorph!, which the Artists’ Association MUU has been producing since 1995. PERFORMANSSI 2011 as the 10th festival follows the tradition of one of the oldest Nordic festival focused in performance art. The latest festivals are Amorph!08 in Paris and Helsinki, curated by Juha Valkeapää; Amorph!06 Cover up, curated by the Oblivia group members Annika Tudeer and Anna Krzystek; and Amorph!03 Summit of Micronations, curated by Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen.
