Mummy is Riding High – Animal mummies, skeletons and carrion animals in their element!
In nature a dying or a dead animal usually becomes food for other animals. The first scavengers arrive before the body is cold. During the decomposition process that lasts for weeks, several different species each take their turn at the ‘dinner table’ until all that is left are the bones, even if that.
Sometimes, however, scavengers and worms are fooled out of their meal, allowing the body to remain uneaten and left outside the great circle of life. A mummy is created when the body dries out relatively quickly and, once dried, can provide no nutrition for others.
This exhibition at the Turku Biological Museum showcases carrion, eaters of carrion (scavengers) and mummies.
