Inner landscapes

Flashes of Life

The Inner Landscapes exhibition brings together ceramics, photography, sound and video images. It digs through layers of history by unearthing individual stories and photo albums. The artists have produced works that show flashes of the lives of nine inhabitants of Turku over a long period of time. By juxtaposing personal memories with the history of Turku City, the exhibition helps us access, through perceptions and impressions, the ways in which people find their place in the world.

Like everywhere else in the world, elderly Turku residents reminisce about their lives through photo albums, sharing the memories and stories captured in the pictures and reflecting on the present. Japanese ceramic artists Tomoko Kurahara and Satoko Sai, and photographer Marja Pirilä, will come to Turku. Here they will listen, interview, see and photograph Turku as it is seen by elderly people, who also remember the city as it was in times gone by. The artists will then use the material to create an exhibition featuring ceramics, photographs and video that will present a very personal take on Turku’s history and how it relates to the present day.

The ceramic team is from Tokyo, and includes Tomoko Kurahara (who studied at the Aalto University in Helsinki) and Satoko Sai. They use photographs in their ceramic work to create impressive and unique ceramics collections.

Marja Pirilä has worked extensively with photography and specialises in camera obscura techniques. Pirilä received the National Award for Photography in 2000, has published a number of photography books and has held exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. In addition, the team includes visual artist Terhi Asumaniemi and nurse Ritva Muurinen.

The Nykyaika Photographic Centre from Tampere is running this project.
