The idea for Silence came from the actors’ wish to make a performance on their own terms. Silence has no director or a playwright; it came about though the rehearsal process and an original idea for Acting: ABC.
A theatre performance always begins with silence. From the “absolute silence-signs” on stage doors to the silence of the audience awaiting the performance to begin. Stage lights bring about the holy moment of theatre: the audience and performer come face to face.
Silence explores the myths and beliefs behind this basic unit. Why do the actors want to act? What are they afraid of? What does an actor dream of? Why does a person want to be seen? What do actors really think onstage? Silence also ponders on the myths related to watching the performance. What is the fourth wall? Or subtext? Why is it forbidden to whistle in the theatre? Why can’t you say the name of That Scottish Play aloud onstage?
