What is so fascinating about fire? The flickering shadows on the wall, the multi-coloured flames, the raw power and energy of fire? Or is it the notions that we associate with fire: burning love, exhilarating passion and the fiery flames of hell? Perhaps we are drawn to the two opposite qualities of fire – the security and the danger fire provides. While making a live fire may not be part of our lives anymore, our fascination with fire has not diminished.
The self-portrayal exhibition of the Capital of Culture year takes the visitor into a sensory immersion in the world of flames. The exhibition describes the many meanings of fire and provides new and original exhibition experiences. In the joint exhibition by Heureka, the Finnish Science Centre and the Central Museum of Turku, the audience can hear how the use of fire was born and what it has meant for humankind, find themselves in the middle of the Great Fire of Turku and discover how fire, in all its ferocity and destructiveness, can also be a new beginning.
A key theme at the exhibition will be the destructive Great Fire of Turku in 1827. The exhibition will present the city’s fire in from a Nordic, a European and a Global point of view. The exhibition will pay attention to the city residents’ point of view and the effect fires have had in the development of the cityscape and changes in the residents' lives. Visitors can also take the opportunity to build their own City of Turku!
Heureka, The Finnish Science Center and The Museum Centre of Turku have joint responsibility for the production of this exhibition.
