Alvar Aalto and the Dimensions on Wood is a touring exhibition showcasing Alvar Aalto’s (1898–1976) works in furniture design. The exhibition has toured the world since 2008 and now visits Finland for the first time. With this instalment, the focus of the exhibition shifts from architecture to design.
Starting to use wood as a material for furniture design seems to be largely responsible for liberating Aalto’s design language as an architect as well. An important starting point was the Paimio Sanatorium furniture set, whose technical prerequisites were achieved in close cooperation with carpenter Otto Korhonen, the manager of the Huonekalutehdas Korhonen furniture manufacturing company. Located in Kaarina, the furniture company continues to use the same techniques for manufacturing furniture based on Aalto’s designs. The Alvar Aalto and the Dimensions on Wood exhibition highlights the successful cooperation between Aalto and Korhonen.
The exhibition is organised by the City of Kaarina, Huonekalutehdas Korhonen and the Alvar Aalto Foundation.
