The internationally acknowledged Finnish theatre director Kristian Smeds will now achieve his long-term dream of staging Fyodor Dostoyevsky's world famous novel, The Brothers Karamazov. The performance will be staged by 15 young Estonian actors, with whom Smeds has planned the play since 2008.
12Karamazovs - The Karamazov Workshop will be based on the literary classic, but Smed’s interpretation will be far from traditional. Russian soul, God, love and death. The state of humanity, good versus evil, guilt, fear. The legitimacy of a father’s murder and the responsibility that comes with it. Eternal questions, morality, immorality, a fuel to the flames.
Using all the techniques of contemporary theatre, the Karamazov sisters and brothers will release their Dionysian energy through intense performances in dance, music and do-it-yourself art.
Kristian Smeds has significantly advanced the artistic cooperation between Finland and the countries along the Baltic Sea by involving international working groups in his activities. 12Karamazov continues this work with this performance produced in close cooperation with the Von Krahl Theatre in Tallinn. The project is partly produced by the Turku City Theatre and the European 2011 Capitals of Culture Turku and Tallinn.
