The Finnish Smoke Sauna Exhibition has opened at the Kuralan Kylämäki Village

The exhibition takes us through the evolution of sauna in the past two thousand years.

An exhibition on the history of the Finnish smoke sauna has opened at the info centre of the Kuralan Kylämäki Village. The Kylämäki Village of Living History is well suited for the exhibition because of the two remaining – and functional – old saunas of the village.

Sauna Obscura

Steaming Hot Art

In June, the Finnish sauna craze will truly let itself loose in Turku. Art saunas scattered around the city will stay open all summer and will rescue us from even cooler, cloudier days. Certainly, nobody will be left out in the cold!

Saunas pamper and cleanse you, but city residents and tourists alike will also now have the chance to enjoy the artistic steam from sauna rooms that are very different from each other. To those fancying a sauna bath, locations on offer include a river, open-air swimming pool, a park and the sea. For what’s likely to be the best experience – try all four!
You can experience these saunas either alone or in a group. The most essential thing is to bring an open mind, a swimsuit and a towel with you!

Sauna Obscura is a floating sauna where the landscape outside the sauna is projected on to the walls.

Tickets to Art Saunas are now for sale

Four artists have been invited to design and build experimental art saunas, which are also open to the public during the summer 2011 (meaning they are warm and ready for use). The art saunas bring new dimensions to conventional traditions of sauna-building and Finnish sauna culture and give new ways of experiencing space to the sauna-goers. Reserve your own sauna shifts and enjoy unique chance to bathe in piece of arts around Turku.

How does it feel to take a sauna on a sauna raft floating in the sea, and sit inside a camera at the same time? Or relax in a transparent sauna in the middle of the city, and watch the bustle of the city through the glass walls? You can also enjoy a sauna on the River Aura or in fairytale-like garlic-shaped sauna.
