Helsinki to become the centre of the design world

Helsinki’s year as World Design Capital will start on New Year’s Eve, when the start of 2012 is celebrated at Senate Square with the Celebration of Helsinki 3D projection and the Resolution Bar, among other things. The year will introduce expert encounters, novel perspectives of usability and over 100 events.

The World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 comprises actually five cities, i.e., Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The term WDC emphasises the broader sense of design for the urban environment, economy and residents.

The WDC programme includes approximately 250 projects, some of which are already familiar from Turku. The 2012 programme is the most extensive design entity ever implemented in Finland, and one of the largest in the entire world.

Thank you and goodbye from 2011 Corner

2011 Corner, the meeting place of the Capital of Culture by the river Aura, closed its doors on 22 December. The Corner hosted the information point, café, Design Shop, support service for 2011 projects and the Lippupiste ticket office, which has already stopped operating on the premises.

In its two-plus years of existence, the Corner attracted 230,150 visits and proved its worth among city residents and tourists alike.

Projects of the Turku 2011 programme were able to use the Corner’s office hotel and meeting room facilities free-of-charge, and also received support in the production of the events through things like the issue of permits and practical arrangements. Volunteer activities were also co-ordinated from the Corner.

World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 - For Better Cities

A city of happy people, bubbling with joyful creativity, surrounded by everyday design. This is Helsinki, which will serve as the World Design Capital 2012 together with Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, and Lahti.

In our world, design can be old or new. Small or large. Beautiful or controversial. Visible or invisible. Design is often also for the public good. For example, public transport or public health care cannot function without proper planning.
