Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel charmed everyone in Turku

Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel received a warm welcome as they began their visit to Turku. Despite the rainy weather an estimated crowd of 2,600 people had gathered to greet the guests arriving on the Tre Kronor.

The guests were received by the Chair of the Board of the City of Turku, Minna Arve, and 5-year-old Doris Kulmala, who handed a bouquet of flowers to the Crown Princess.

The visit’s central theme, The Baltic Sea, arose immediately during the welcome ceremony in front of Forum Marinum when the Crown Princess couple received a gift from the City of Turku – one of Turku’s signature seal statues. The purpose of the seal statues is to remind us of the conservation of the Baltic.

Culture did good – also on Turku Day

The Capital of Culture year’s Turku Day was celebrated on Sunday 18 September 2011. Culture took over the city’s marketplaces, river banks, the new Myllysilta Bridge and many other places for the day.

The doors of City Hall were open from noon to 3 pm on Turku Day with the theme ‘Culture does good’.

The Hair musical, part of the Turku 2011 programme, gave rise to the a cappella group Asema, which performed in the City Hall lobby at noon and guided the audience to the city council hall, where there were speeches and presentations on how culture does good.

Turku returns to the map

The ’Turku Returns to the Map’ tour tells how the people of Turku colonised the bottom of a lakes, the tops of cliffs, steep riverbanks and the flat fields of their town.

Most parts of the town that you will see have been rebuilt countless times. En route you will hear about misfortune and strokes of luck, the demolition and preservation of the old, as well as the changing of plans in quite a different direction from what had been originally intended. The face of the town never looks the same on two consecutive days. Let’s go and see how it looks today.

What about 5 minutes acrobatics before a lunch? This question could have been posed in the Commission´s Berlaymont building on Thursday. The first circus attacks was made at noon and applied the idea of Euroepan Capital of Culture - culture approaches people directly.

Editorial: Sailing before the wind

“A city that is able to combine its people together with culture will reap long-term benefits from the year of culture.”

“I’d already heard that the Turku Capital of Culture year was off to a great start, but now that I’ve visited Turku, I’m truly impressed by what I’ve seen. I believe that the year will have long-lasting effects on the entire city and region.” These encouraging words were spoken by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, when he visited Turku in early March.

I find it easy to agree with him. We’re doing great!

Audience of One

It only takes one, passionate fan with a genuine desire to meet, understand and be inspired by the artist.

All the most popular performances are sold out, it’s damn near impossible to get a reservation at the best restaurants, and the most important event of the year is something you’ll probably have to settle for reading about in the papers afterwards.
