The Heart of Finland route takes you on a time travel

The Heart of Finland route winds near from Turku Cathedral to Vanhalinna in Lieto

The route will take you on a time travel through the history of Turku and the different phases of Finnish society and culture. Audio guidance English is available for theme Villages and the Cultural Scenery (history of the villages). Signs are posted along the route.

Due to construction work on the eastern side of the river near the Railway bridge (Rautatiesilta), we recommend crossing the river allready on Tuomaansilta-bridge.

Culture in Pictures exhibits the best moments of 2011

Turku’s year as the European Capital of Culture was filled with wonderful experiences and memorable moments, with more than 5,000 events organized throughout the Turku region and archipelago. The Culture in Pictures exhibition showcases the best of the year 2011 in gallery Accademia dell'Arte until March 11.

The Culture in Pictures photography exhibition takes the viewer from the touching, sub-zero atmosphere of January’s opening ceremonies into the heat of the art sauna in summertime and concluding in the light extravaganza of the Thank You weekend in the middle of a dark December.

The photography exhibition will open at the Accademia dell'Arte gallery February 21. The gallery will display a diverse selection of 90 photos, thereby providing a summary of Turku’s unforgettable Capital of Culture year.

The Flashback 2011 photograph book wraps up the year 2011

Turku’s year as the European Capital of Culture has now been packaged into a photograph book, which enables you to relive 2011 and return to your fondest memories.

The Flashback 2011 photograph book in three languages wraps up the delightful offerings of Turku’s year as European Capital of Culture. The pictures take you from the River Aura to the open sea, from Logomo to living rooms and from the pool to the roofs of the city. The basic elements of life – fire, water, air and earth – lead you back towards the darkening season, and the review of the year concludes in the light extravaganza of the Thank You weekend in the middle of a dark December.

Finns give hire rating to Turku's Capital of Culture year

According to a recent study, Turku’s European Capital of Culture year 2011 was a success. As many as 87 per cent of participants in events arranged during the year rated their experiences as either very positive or reasonably positive.

“It can be said that Turku 2011 was a four star Capital of Culture", states Merja Tuominen, Turku Regional Director of Taloustukimus.

Fire! Fire!

Fire! Fire! and Only a Game? reopened to the public on Tuesday Jan. 17

The Fire! Fire! exhibition depicting the great fire of Turku and the power of fire continue until the end of July, and the Only a Game? exhibition showcasing football continue until the middle of April 2012.

The reason behind continuing the exhibitions is the feedback received from the visitors and the great demand. A lot of children and families with children have visited the exhibitions. There were over 10,000 visitors to Logomo during the last weekend the exhibitions had a free entrance.

Circus Sudenkuoppa

Turku took the year 2011 offering to the opening of the Capital of Culture Maribor

The 2011 European Capital of Culture Turku has a high profile in the opening of one the two Capitals of Culture in 2012, Maribor. Turku took various films and circus art, and electronic music from the Turku Capital of Culture year 2011 to Maribor, Slovenia at the opening weekend 13–15 January 2012.

On Friday night 13 January in Maribor, circus Sirkus Sudenkuoppa from Turku performed fire acrobatics both at the gallery and in the centre of Maribor. The evening continued at the Turku 2011 Night Moves club, where multi-instrumentalist Jimi Tenor and DJ Esko Routamaa performed, as well as Digital Delight from Maribor.

Free entrance to Logomo this weekend

Logomo has been open for public from the middle of January every day. During the year 2011 Logomo exhibitions and numerous shows have gathered 220 000 visitors.

In honour of the closing weekend, the entrance to the Logomo exhibitions is free for the entire weekend 17 - 18 December.

Turku Enjoyed a Successful Year as European Capital of Culture

Turku has completed its year as European Capital of Culture very successfully. The comprehensive programme has produced new collaboration while creating a platform for continuing projects. Turku has also gained more visibility in global media than ever before and visitor numbers have gone up as well.

"During the last few months, not many people have asked me how everything is going; I have been showered with congratulations," says Cay Sevón, the CEO of the Turku 2011 Foundation, which was responsible for implementing the Capital of Culture year.

"Turku has permanently established itself as a Finnish representation of a beautiful European cultural city, both from a local perspective and abroad. The success Turku has enjoyed this year has been an undeniable indication of the power of culture and how it can impact society in a positive way," states Sevón.

Art in the Dark -art orienteering campaign has started

The Central Park of Culture and Exercise project compiled the Art in the Dark art orienteering map  to lighten up the darkness of November.

In November, the darkness is overwhelming and the weather is often grey and dull. The gloom can be alleviated, however, by light and colour, which are surprisingly abundant all around you! The Central Park of Culture and Exercise project compiled the Art in the Dark art orienteering map for you to enjoy.

Culture and physical exercise support togetherness and interaction, stimulate the senses and provide great experiences and well-being. This way, they can also help you get through the dark season. Now is a good time to go out and enjoy culture and exercise!

Akita

European Eyes Looks on Japan in Governor's House

Launched in 1999, the European Eyes on Japan / Japan Today photography project has brought engaging photographers from various European countries to explore contemporary Japan through their work. This exhibition is the thirteenth during the project, and it shows the results of Kalle Kataila’s and Krista Mölder’s visit to Akita.

To date, 50 such photographers have captured 32 Japanese prefectures in their own ways. The project is scheduled to continue annually and to eventually cover all 47 prefectures.
