Europa

Abduction of Europa at Samppalinna under the full Moon

Abduction of Europa is contemporary theatre that combines visual effects, circus and various stage elements within the frame of a mythological story. In the story, the Greek gods Zeus and Europa aspire to reach each other across the ocean that separates them.

The performance takes place above and under the water, creating an unbelievably mystical atmosphere for evenings in October. Special costume design and the magical water environment will make the performance appear like a futuristic fashion show.

The AKHE group specialises in the use of various mechanical props and apparatuses as part of the performance. In a joint effort, the Engineering Theatre AKHE (RUS), the puppetry students at the Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences and the TIP-Connection Association will produce a rare performance.

Never before have concurrent Capitals of Culture been as close to each other.

Ebon Grayman

Magical variety show of a vampire crazy in love has begun

Do you have the appetite for an intimate evening with Count Dracula? The stories of love and courage are set to take place in the Spiegeltent Theatre, at the Mannerheim Park in central Turku.

Secret fantasies which pervade our imagination will be revealed as the Cirque Dracula love story unfolds. International circus performers, many of them with experience at the Cirque Du Soleil, will passionately present the Count’s story using spectacular somersaults, acrobatics and kung-fu.

Children and Soldiers the Main Targets of the Circus Attacks

The students of Turku Arts Academy brought the Capital of Culture greetings in form of a circus show to two totally different target groups on Friday 20.5. Young children and NATO-staff members were the ones who were entertained for a few minutes each.

The annual festivity called Footfest, organised by the European School in Brussels, got their share of Turku-inspired culture. 3000 students of the biggest European school in Brussels enjoyed the circus performance in the morning sun. Especially the youngest of the pupils, the preschool students, were fascinated by the show that was performed by the five Arts Academy students.

Circus greetings from Turku created a lot of joy in Brussels

Young circus artists from Turku Arts Academy brought a smile to EU-offficials faces in Brussels on 19-25. May 2011.  For the first time a European Capital of culture performs such attacs inside the EU-institutions, where European culture on EU-level  is framed.

What about 5 minutes acrobatics before a lunch? This question could have been posed in the Commission´s Berlaymont building on Thursday. The first circus attacks was made at noon and applied the idea of Euroepan Capital of Culture - culture approaches people directly.

In addition to balancing and dancing, Sanja Kosonen performs acrobatic stunts that only a few people in the world are capable of pulling off.

Circus Lifts Us Up to the Stars

This summer, the curtain into the world of circus will open in Turku, as international groups Cirque Dracula, Future Circus and The Elements offer the latest novelties and traditional virtuosity.

The season of circus is launched with the major production, Cirque Dracula. Finally Finland is honoured to have its first grand variety-style circus show, a production that brings to life the dream of Pauliina Räsänen and Slava Volkov, both masters in pair acrobatics. A wealth of international artists are involved, all connected through the Canadian circus group Cirque du Soleil. American acrobat Ebon Grayman will play the role of the vampire.

När elementen möts skapas en hisnande visuell upplevelse i föreställningen The Elements vid Aura å.

From the Trapeze to Wonderland

Turku 2011 will present the Capital of Culture audience with major productions rarely seen in Finland. During May 2011, the audience will witness a highly anticipated take off with the dance performance ‘Borrowed Light’ by one of the most famous dance groups in Finland, the Tero Saarinen Company. Borrowed Light will start its European tour on the Logomo stage. The performance, that discusses community and commitment, was previously performed at the Helsinki Festival in 2005.

- In my personal work and in the development of my working group, I have begun to understand the importance of the community. Today, we focus too much on individual achievements and on celebrity culture, and so people are becoming more estranged from each other, says dancer-choreographer Tero Saarinen.

Cirque Dracula performed at Senate Square on Friday June 11th.

Cirque Dracula’s Russian bar act takes the first prize

The Russian bar acrobatics act coached by Finland-based Slava Volkov, of Cirque du Soleil fame, has won the first prize at the Leipzig international variety festival on July 4th 2010. The acrobatics act is a part of the Turku Capital of Culture programme’s Cirque Dracula variety performance.

The Leipzig international variety festival witnessed a premium competition. The fact that experimental juggler Denis Paumier from Les Objects Volantes, an avid visitor to Finland, and elastic acrobat Julia from Cirque du Soleil, weren’t among the prize winners, speaks for the level of competition.
